Terry Smiley is the Vice President of Eastern Division for Alabama Power, where he oversees the company’s operations, sales, economic and community development and external affairs activities. Prior to this role, Smiley served as Director of Economic and Community Development, where he led a team responsible for economic, community and commercial business development across the state.
Smiley joined Alabama Power in 2017 as Birmingham Division External Affairs
Manager before assuming duties as the Division External Affairs and Marketing Manager. Smiley has more than 25 years of experience in the utility industry, working at Alagasco before joining Alabama Power. At Alagasco, Smiley served in various roles in operations, customer service, marketing, and governmental relations, where he directed governmental activities across the state of Alabama. While in operations, Smiley led various business improvement initiatives to enhance customer service delivery, collections/debt reduction, and statewide standardization of customer service functions.
Smiley received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration and public and private management from Birmingham-Southern College. He serves on the board of directors for the A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club, Birmingham Education Foundation, YMCA of Greater Birmingham and the Central Six Development Council. He also serves on the United Way Agency Impact Committee and is a member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club, where he Co-Chairs the Birmingham Business Hall of Fame Committee.
In 2009, he was featured in the Birmingham Business Journal Top 40 under 40 and Smiley is a member of the Leadership Birmingham Class of 2012. His previous community engagement includes President of the Birmingham-Southern College National Alumni Association. Smiley completed the Alabama Power Experienced Leadership Development Program and currently serves on the Alabama Power Leadership Development Council.
Smiley was an All-American in basketball for two years and was inducted into the Birmingham-Southern College Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. Smiley and his wife Melissa reside in Homewood and are the proud parents of Evan and Lauren Smiley.
