University of West Alabama Celebrates “Year of Trails” with Unveiling of New Trail Signage
LIVINGSTON, AL – July 28, 2025 – The University of West Alabama (UWA) is proud to announce the official unveiling of new wayfinding and interpretive signage for its extensive campus trail system. The celebration of trails was held in conjunction with the Alabama Trails Foundation and the Alabama Tourism Department, on the UWA campus in Livingston.
This event showcased UWA’s commitment to enhancing its outdoor recreation offerings and aligns perfectly with the statewide “Year of Alabama Trails” initiative, created by the Alabama Tourism Department with help from the Alabama Trails Foundation. The new signage will improve the experience for students, faculty, staff, and community members utilizing UWA’s beautiful network of walking, running, and nature trails.
“We are thrilled to officially unveil our new trail signage with detailed maps. The trails have been a long-term project for our campus and a testament to the natural beauty that surrounds us,” said Tina Naremore Jones, PhD, UWA, Provost. “These trails are a vital asset for our university community, promoting health, wellness, and a deeper appreciation for our environment. We are grateful for the support of the Alabama Trails Foundation and the Alabama Tourism Department in helping to create these maps as part of the ‘Year of Trails.’”
The new signage highlights all the trails found on campus, making it much easier for casual users to find their way along the interconnected paths. A highlight of the trail system is the Blackland Prairie Restoration Project, a 17-acre endeavor led by UWA to restore a former pasture native prairie habitat. More than three miles of trails help visitors explore the return of this native grassland community while providing access to viewing a rich diversity of butterflies, birds, and flowers. These trails are a vital part of the overall work being done in restoring parts of Alabama’s lost prairies. The interconnected trails system connects students, locals, and visitors alike, offering opportunities to explore campus without using a car, to slip away for a few minutes from college life to immerse yourself in nature.
“The University of West Alabama’s dedication to developing and enhancing their trails is a great example of how communities across Alabama are embracing the ‘Year of Trails’,” said Paul DeMarco, Alabama Trails Foundation President. “Improved signage helps visitors find their way and helps to connect all of Alabama’s great trails into something that really highlights Alabama’s remarkable beauty.”
